Introduction to SFIA

This course provides a useful introduction for those who are investigating SFIA for internal use, who wish to know more about the applications of SFIA, and who may be building a business case for the adoption of SFIA.
Participants who complete this course will be able to:
- Understand the underlying idea of SFIA: what is is and what it is not.
- Understand the structure of SFIA: including the categories/subcategories and Levels of Responsibility.
- Understand the principles of determining the skills needed for a job or assignment and determine the appropriate level(s) of those skills.
- Understand the principles of assessing the SFIA skills of an individual.
- Articulate the key benefits of using SFIA in an organisational context.
- Understand the main types of SFIA licencing models.
SFIA for Practitioners

One evening online + pre-course activity (public)
Building on the Introduction to SFIA material this course will prepare participants to become SFIA practitioners. This course is recommended for those who wish to have a more in-depth understanding of how SFIA is applied in practice including practitioners from the IT Team, Human Resources, Learning & Development, and internal consultants.
Participants who complete this course will have practised and had feedback from a Senior SFIA Consultant on the following activities:
- Determining the skills needed for a job or assignment and the appropriate level(s) of those skills.
- Assessing the SFIA skills of an individual.
- Using SFIA as a tool in professional development.
SFIA for Consultants
Duration/Format:
Half Day face-to-face (private)
One evening online + pre-course activity (public)
Building on the Introduction to SFIA and SFIA Practitioner material this course will prepare those who are leading the implementation of SFIA for their organisation, or who are taking over responsibility for maintaining and integrating an existing implementation.
This course will extend participants understanding of how to implement SFIA and will cover the following areas:
- SFIA licencing scenarios
- Mapping SFIA in to the organisation’s structure
- Advising management on appropriate ways to leverage SFIA
- Benefits of using SFIA
- Building a business case for adoption of SFIA
Note: A combined one-day course covering the Introduction, Practitioner and Consultant courses can be offered face-to-face.
Using SFIA in Development Planning

Designed to support people leaders to integrate SFIA data into development planning, this popular half-day course takes participants through how to leverage the structure of SFIA and available skills-gap information to enhance development conversations with their team.
Exercises and examples can be tailored to suit your organisational context.
Job Design using SFIA
Duration/Format:
One Day face-to-face (private)
Targeted at IT management and senior Human Resources practitioners, this one day course takes participants through the approaches used by our team in designing roles and jobs using SFIA, including practical examples based on document review (translating existing position descriptions into SFIA), using process information, sizing and design considerations and rapid prototyping.
Existing familiarity with the SFIA framework (e.g. from attending other courses) is highly recommended.
SFIA Skills Assessor
Duration/Format:
One Day face-to-face (private)
For organisations looking to develop in-house capability to carry out SFIA skills assessments of their staff we offer a one day course which covers the preparation, execution and review of individual skills assessments. Participants are using senior IT staff, IT management, and interested Human Resources practitioners. An existing familiarity with the SFIA framework (e.g. from attending other courses) combined with prior first-hand experience of the assessment process as a participant is highly recommended.
This course is typically scheduled alongside planned staff SFIA skills assessments, and accompanied by mentoring of new assessors to help refine their assessment techniques.
